A mix of creativity and accurate record keeping, a chemist studies substances at the atomic and molecular levels, including the ways in which substances react to one another. This study helps chemists develop new and/or improved products, like pharmaceuticals.

Chemistry majors learn how such products are developed, and use math skills, theory and experimentation to study these substances. Classes like analytical chemistry, biochemistry, organic/inorganic chemistry, polymer and materials chemistry, and thermodynamics will be part of your course load, along with lots of time in the lab. A bachelor’s degree may not be enough.

Graduates with chemistry degrees may work for a variety of industries (industrial, educational, scientific and the government) but a bachelor’s degree may only afford a job preparing chemicals or running equipment,

A master’s degree or Ph.D. is required for many research jobs in the chemistry. Another option for someone with a bachelor’s: teaching at the K-12 level. Fun fact: The founder of modern chemistry, Robert Boyle, invented the litmus test.
