Your love of Legos as a child has pretty much dictated your love of choosing a career in civil engineering. The major prepares you to design, construct, supervise, operate, and maintain large construction projects.

If that doesn’t wow you, how about knowing that civil engineers are responsible for projects like the Golden Gate Bridge, the English Channel Tunnel, and the Freedom Tower? You’ll rely on your superior math and science skills to ace classes such as structural analysis and design, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, environmental awareness, strength of materials, and engineering economics.

You would think graduates with degrees in civil engineering work on site, but most civil engineers work in an office, with occasional visits to construction sites, such as roads, skyscrapers, airports, tunnels, bridges and dams, and even water treatment facilities. You will most likely specialize in an area for your undergraduate degree, and if you want to pursue management positions, will need to have a master’s degree. Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States, was a civil engineer before his presidential term.
