The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary says
Southern Seminary has been an innovator in theological education since its founding in 1859 in Greenville, South Carolina as the first seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention. The school's pioneering legacy began in the visionary mind of James Petigru Boyce, the school's first president. Boyce dreamed of a school that would accept all God-called individuals for study regardless of their educational background. At Southern Seminary, TRUTH is our foundation for learning and our LEGACY runs deep. Each year, thousands of students see their VISION come alive while fulfilling their ministry calling with us. We believe that we are living in serious times and we are looking for students who are serious about impacting our world with the gospel of Christ Under the lordship of Jesus Christ, the mission of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is to be totally committed to the Bible as the Word of God, to the Great Commission as our mandate, and to be a servant of the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention by training, educating, and preparing ministers of the gospel for more faithful service. The seminary utilizes evangelical scholarship with reverent dependence upon the guidance of the Holy Spirit who witnesses to the truth of the Holy Scriptures. The programs of the seminary focus on the development of ministerial competencies at the pre-baccalaureate, baccalaureate, professional post-baccalaureate, professional doctoral, and research doctoral levels. The seminary also provides services to persons, churches, and denominational entities through its programs of continuing education for ministry.
