Are you in love with a foreign language? Does the idea of traveling to another country and learning about its history and customs really get your blood pumping? Do you believe the best way to understand your own culture is to fully immerse yourself in another? A Foreign Language major is exactly what you need.
FL majors study in-depth a language of their choosing. They study the linguistics, written and oral history of a language, as well as the literature written in that language. But FL majors do much more than simply read and write. FL majors almost always spend considerable time—sometimes two years or more—in a country that natively speaks the language they are studying. FL majors become experts in the history and culture that gave birth to the language they study.
Important classes in high school include foreign language study, as well as AP English, American and world history, current world problems, and the humanities. Especially useful will be advanced foreign language study. If it is possible to study a language all four years at your school, you will be well ahead when you reach college.
FL majors find work in a large variety of fields. Many work in academia as teachers. However, there is a great demand for workers who can speak multiple languages, and thus FL majors are sought in nearly every level and field of business, as well as in government, non-profit work, and as translators and interpreters.
