Are you a sucker for all things French? French fries? French movies? French kissing? Or maybe you just love the language and want to learn more about France’s history and culture? A French major may be just the right decision for you.

French majors study, of course, the French language. They learn to read, write and speak fluent French. But French majors do much more than that. French majors also study French culture, the history of France and its colonies, such as Algeria and the Ivory Coast, the origins and exportation of French cuisine, as well as French music, architecture and geography.

It is generally considered essential for French majors to spend at least one quarter or semester in a French speaking country, so if you’ve always wanted to see gay Paris, then this is the major for you. Important high school courses include as many years of French language as possible, as well as advanced English, Western history, and the history of Rome.

French majors often go into academic fields as teachers or college professors, but there is work in publishing, government, and translation. French is still considered the “business language,” and many French majors find their skills are of high value in international business.

Famous figures with French majors include JK Rowling, Ashley Judd and Brooke Shields.
