Are you someone who wants more control over the course of their education? Do you wish you could put together a degree of your own? Do you believe that a well-rounded education should cover not just one field of study, but many? Then take time to consider a General Studies major.

General Studies majors craft their own degrees by picking courses from multiple disciplines so that they can achieve a more specific and personal educational goal. No one GS major is exactly like any other, but it is a mistake to assume that GS majors simply pick classes willy-nilly from a course catalogue. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Rather, GS majors often have specific career goals in mind, and they know that a broader education will be critical to their respective career choices.

GS majors, for example, may choose to take courses in Communications, Spanish and Chicano Studies, with the goal of working in outreach programs that target immigrants, or as a foundation for a master’s degree in Public Health. Helpful courses in high school cover all the bases: AP English, history, current world problems, foreign language, mathematics, biology and chemistry.

GS majors find employment in every field and business. A GS major can be a particularly strong degree for someone looking to enter into politics and government.

Famous figures with GS majors include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal.
