Are you intrigued by the German language? Fascinated by the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm? Or perhaps you want to study a foreign language, but French and Spanish don’t interest you? German literature, philosophy and culture are some of the most influential in world history, and if you’re excited to learn a new language and see a different part of the world, then a German major may be just what you’re looking for.

German majors study intensely the German language and read the classics of German literature. They become intimately familiar with writers such as Nietzsche, Gunter Grass, and Franz Kafka. But German majors study more than literature, they take courses in German history, philosophy, religion, and classes studying the rise and fall of the Third Reich.

Travel to Germany is often considered invaluable to German majors, and you may find yourself living in Germany for at least one quarter or semester.

Important classes in high school include as many German courses as possible, as well as AP English, Western history and civilization, WWII studies, and current world problems.

German majors often find work in academia as teachers or college professors, but also in the fields of publishing, journalism, and interpretation. Many German majors combine their degree with minors in other fields, such as business or music, giving themselves greater career opportunities.
