Are you a kind, caring and thoughtful person? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of others? Do you see yourself as someone who would enjoy working with the very young, the elderly, the disadvantaged? If you possess these qualities, a Human Services major is up your alley.

Human Services majors study adult and child development, ethics, law, counseling, and medical aspects of human services. They seek to understand the vast array of challenges that people can face in their lifetime—such as dementia, homelessness, domestic abuse, abandonment, or drug addiction—and how to connect with or provide the resources and aid needed to get people back on their feet. Many HS majors also study how to fulfill basic physical and emotional needs.

Courses in high school that will be useful include foreign language study, English, sociology, ethics, psychology and classes in counseling. Also useful will be volunteer work in local service centers such as Planned Parenthood, homeless shelters, food shelters, or a local nursing home.

HS majors find work in a variety of settings, generally in the non-profit, government and health services sectors. These include hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, mental health facilities, and working with government assistance programs which provide care for citizens.
