If you would rather spend a Saturday afternoon stylishly rearranging your bedroom furniture instead of heading over to the skate park, then a degree in interior design may be for you. Besides making a space beautiful through the use of color, fabric, and furniture, the professional is tasked with creating functional and safe rooms with lighting and various materials.

Classes include interior design theory, history of design, graphic communications, and design studio. You’ll learn how to create floor plans and use your drawing skills to develop a vision for clients; and be skillful at working with people, to understand what they want and how to fit it into their budget. You’ll learn how to read blueprints and how to adhere to local building codes and regulations.

While many decorators work for interior design firms, architects, or other companies, some opt to strike out on their own, offering their talents directly to clients.

Your talents will help shape the indoor spaces of offices, hospitals, schools, private homes, and public spaces, such as shopping centers and airport terminals. You may also find work as a set designer, a columnist for a design publication, or even the host of your own television show (see Nate Berkus). Leonardo da Vinci was an interior designer. Philippe Starck, Laura Day, Jonathan Adler and Nate Berkus are contemporary designers.
