Were you the peacemaker in your circle of friends growing up? Are you fascinated by how countries work together, and by how sometimes they don’t? Have you ever wondered what diplomats and world leaders do and say behind closed doors, how they make the decisions that influence the course of world events, that make both peace and war? Then an International Relations and Affairs major is exactly what you’re looking for.

IRA majors study diplomacy, the art of negotiating and getting along with your neighbors. They seek to understand foreign policy, politics, and history, so that they can fully grasp how nations throughout time have worked together…or how they haven’t. IRA majors will focus upon international law, environmental law, international political economy, global human rights, as well as politics specific to regions, such as Latin American politics and Middle East politics.

Useful courses in high school include foreign language study, AP English, US history, US politics, Western civilization, European and Asian history, and courses in government.

IRA majors often find work in government and international business, although there is also work in academia as teachers and college professors. Some IRA majors go into politics, and some seek work in other countries as US representatives.

Famous figures with IRA majors include President Bill Clinton and Salma Hayek.
