Well known for horse-racing and bluegrass music, Kentucky also boasts over 125 colleges and universities. There are eight public four-year universities in the state, led by the two major research universities: the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky, which have the highest academic rankings and admission standards in the state. Other well known schools include Eastern Kentucky University, Western Kentucky University, Morehead State University, and Berea College - the first coeducational college in the south to admit black and white students. Transylvania University, located in Lexington, is the oldest university west of the Allegheny mountains, founded in 1780. In addition, 16 schools operate under the umbrella of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.
