Are you the “help” desk for your dorm? If you are constantly fielding tech questions and troubleshooting problems (and enjoy it), consider majoring in management information systems. Technology is a cornerstone for all businesses, and as a management information systems major, you’ll learn how to employ that technology for any type of business so data can be stored, accessed and analyzed (for instance, create databases that track sales and helps retailers sell products online).

As an undergrad, you’ll learn to build databases, manage work and data flow, plan projects. Typical courses include database design, programming, project management, emerging technologies, ecommerce, networking, and telecommunications. Information systems managers plan, coordinate and supervise information technology in an organization. They oversee systems analysts, computer programmers, and other computer-related employees. They also help determine the IT goals of a business and implement systems to reach them. For instance, they’re responsible for installation and upgrading of computer hardware and software, developing computer networks as well as Internet and intranet sites.

Career options include business analyst, Tech support specialist, network administrator, and IT consultant.
