    Mississippi is home to over 50 colleges, universities, and technical schools. The most well known institutions are the four year public universities of the University of Mississippi or “Ole Miss”, Mississippi State University, and Jackson State University. There are also a handful of smaller private schools, such as Tougaloo College, Rust College, and Belhaven University. Alcorn State University, located in Lorman, has the distinction of being the first black land-grant college in the United States.
