As a music major, you’ll study the history of music, music theory and composition in addition to practicing playing an instrument for performance. Beyond Bach and Beethoven, you’ll study non-Western music, as well as the folk and blues tradition in North America. In addition to regular classes like music history, music theory and composition, you’ll spend time practicing solo and attending rehearsals to practice with a group. There are regular recitals for peers and professors.

Most music majors intend to perform, but this course of study can lead to a career as an archivist, arts administrator, composer, music teacher (private lessons or in a school environment) and record labels. The work environment is just as varied: offices, churches, recording studios and private homes. Music majors interested in directing or conducting a symphony usually pursue a master’s degree. But, the degree isn’t limiting by any means. Juanita Kidd Stout, a Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania (and the first African American woman elected to a judgeship in the US) was a music major.
