Are you an excellent communicator? Do your friends come to you because you’re a good listener and offer good advice on how to deal with family and relationships issues? Do you want to make a difference in people’s lives? Then a Social Sciences major may be for you.

SS majors focus on specific techniques, skills and resources that help people manage the social relationships in their lives. Courses include study in human behavior, psychology and abnormal psychology, social welfare, social policy and law, ethics, anthropology, and economics.

Helpful courses in high school include AP English, American and world history, humanities, current world problems, communications, counseling, politics and government. Also useful will be mentorships with local counselors or in social services work, such as a rehabilitation center or in a veteran’s hospital.

SS majors generally find employment in government, public health, and in the non-profit sector. Jobs include marriage counselor, clergy, social caseworker, gerontologist, and sex therapist. Famous figures with SS majors include Karl Marx and Max Weber.
