Are you fascinated by history? A political news junkie? Do you believe that every citizen should have a working understanding of how government is structured, how it operates, and why it sometimes fails? If you do, and you also have a fervent desire to work with youth, then a Social Studies Education major is right up your alley.

SSE majors focus on two areas of study: social sciences and education. In the first, courses include American and European history, Roman and Greek history, political science, origins of government, philosophy, law and ethics. In the second, SSE majors study adolescent psychology, classroom management, proper classroom assessment, and childhood development.

Helpful classes in high school include AP English, western civilization, current world problems, European history, politics and government, as well as foreign language study. Also useful will be any experiences involving kids, such as youth coaching or camp counseling.

SSE majors generally pick one of two age groups to work with: either elementary students or middle/high age students. SSE majors find employment with public school districts as teachers, though they can continue their education and become college professors or school administrators.
