A sociologist studies the social behaviors of groups, cultures, organizations, institutions, as well as the people within that group and their roles within the group. If you’d like to understand how people interact in different social situations, and how to help us all live better together, than a sociology degree may be a good fit for you. You’ll study social problems, theory, psychology, criminology, and specific groups like families or minority groups.

Depending on the course work that you enjoy, you can get a good sense of what to do with your major. For instance, if you liked organizational theory you ay consider a job in public policy, if you enjoyed the research aspect, you may pursue a position in marketing research and public relations. While graduating with a bachelor’s degree will prepare you for a job in social services, public policy, education, and even in business, if you want to be a sociologist, you’ll need a master’s degree or Ph.D.
