You love language, choose your words carefully, and know that listening is also an important skill. You also kicked butt on the debate team. Rhetoric is more than persuading people to view your side. In a speech communication and rhetoric major, you’ll study verbal and nonverbal communications through media and in person. Classes include the art of persuasion, public speaking and the psychology of communication. You’ll also study intercultural, interpersonal and mass communication. Classes go beyond formal lectures to include role-playing to discern nonverbal communication and yes, presenting a speech to classmates to practice your powers of persuasion.

The broad background you receive will prepare you for a plethora of careers in public relations, advertising, human resources, government education, media, and social services. Think speechwriter, journalist, and advertising/marketing copywriter. Curtis Edward Warner, running back for the Seattle Seahawks, has a bachelor’s degree in speech communication.
