Roger Schmidt is the Executive Director of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, a nationally-acclaimed, multidisciplinary arts camp based in Sitka, Alaska. He grew up in Sitka and attended Camp as a student. He graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory with degrees in philosophy and music, with additional music studies at the Aspen Music Festival, Pierre Monteux School and the Bruckner Conservatory in Austria. He is a recognized leader in arts education having received the Alaska Governor's Award for Arts Education (2004) and the "Coming Up Taller Award" from the White House (2007). His talk examines three points: how his own dreams and adventures shaped his life and work; the importance of allowing young people to dream and be creative; and how the power of positive thinking inspired a large corps of volunteers from Sitka to turn an abandoned college campus in to a progressive center of arts education in the United States.About TEDx, x = independently organized event.
