To me, painting is a metaphor for my existence, says Moses. "It all feeds into my paintings. How these paintings are read, well, different people read them in different ways." Regarded as one of the most innovative and prominent abstract expressionists of the post-war era, Moses has achieved international acclaim for his experimental and evolutionary bodies of work. Moses is still awed by the process of his creations carefully noting that his technique is continuously morphing rather than necessarily changing. "I never know when that moment will happen when I realize that I have something special," reflects Moses. "But when it does, it can come at me with such surprise -- that is a beautiful thing." His most recent paintings are a large multi-panel Waterfall Series containing specs of glitter and brilliant, florescent colors and the smokey atmospheric paintings of his Sumo series. These contain elements spray painted through netting and stencils, layered on top of one another. Born in Long Beach, California in 1926, Moses enlisted in the Navy at 17 and served as a surgical technician during World War II. After the war, Moses studied at Long Beach City College before transferring to UCLA to train under the expressionist painter Rico Lebrun. In 1957, Moses exhibited at the famous Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles along with other prominent artists such as Wallace Berman, Robert Irwin and Ed Rusha. In 1996, Moses' paintings were documented in a major retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Arts. In 1980, Moses received a?Guggenheim Fellowship which is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional creative ability in the arts. Moses has had numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally over the span of his six decade long career. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together and share a TED-like experience.
