Farmer's Markets As Distribution Hubs: Laura Avery at TEDxLAMIracleMile

Farmers Markets as food distribution hubs: for the first time in California, farmers have direct access to consumers at Certified Farmers Markets, where they can sell at retail and keep the profits on the farm. "Consumers" include a wide range of people, including market table shoppers, school districts, local restaurants, produce companies, market basket aggregators, on-farm CSA's (other farmers) and "market recovery" programs that take leftover produce to feed underserved constituents throughout the Los Angeles area. This all comes under the simple stated finding of the California Food and Agriculture Code Section 47000 (a): "Direct marketing of agricultural products benefits the agricultural community and the consumer by, among other things, providing an alternative method (i.e. not a conventional wholesale channel -- my emphasis) for growers to sell their products while benefiting the consumer by supplying quality produce at reasonable price."In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
