Reclaiming our economic system: Adam Mathews at TEDxWageningen

As a one time crane driver, school manager, peach picker, international secondary metals trader and English teacher, Adam's many experiences have taught him to question the world from a multitude of different angles. It was that inquiring mindset and a thirst for knowledge that bought Adam back into academia last year onto the Sustainable Development masters at Utrecht University, where he is currently writing his thesis on 'The Impact of Excessive Speculation on Commodities Markets'. It is this study which has opened his eyes further to a major contradiction in our current economic system -- the opening of commodity markets to all has increased profits of financial institutions while driving up the prices of the most basic commodities, making rice and many other vital resources unavailable to many of the world's poor.In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
