TEDxSTJOHNS - Burnley "Rocky" Jones - Breaking Down Social Barriers

Rocky has been an advocate for people of colour and Aboriginals his entire life. As a proud African Nova Scotian, he is recognized internationally as a political activist for human rights, race and poverty. Rocky first rose to prominence during the 1960s as a member of the Students Union for Peace Action (SUPA) and later as a successful defence lawyer. Rocky is a founding member of The Black United Front of Nova Scotia, National Black Coalition of Canada, Dalhousie Law School Indigenous Blacks and Mi'kmaq Program, African Canadian Liberation Movement, African Canadian Caucus of Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Project to name a few. He is responsible for first bringing the Black Panther Party to Canada.In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
