Esther is a London based visual artist who grew up in Singapore. She is interested in painting the dark world of allusion, playing on the psychological fascination with horror. Her paintings are visceral and sensate, with imagery emerging from dramatic depths, illuminated by filmic and unnatural light. Recent works incorporate a greater sense of abstraction into the paintings through an emphasis on the physicality of paint and touch; thus lessening the directly descriptive element of the work and highlighting the more imaginative ambiguities of imagery. Her practice is influenced by a variety of intellectual traditions, from the philosophies of Foucault and Delueze to a combination of Buddhist and Existential philosophy. Talk: Space for authenticityToday, we live in a world in no shortage of excess or stimuli; we are bombarded with information and our fingers are quick to Google for knowledge. We are constantly confronted by a myriad of imagery and in the rush of everyday life, most of us end up with voices in our heads that are not ours but of many. Martin Heidegger calls this "Transparent Coping" (To do what is the thing to do) and Hubert Dreyfus warns us of our "technological nihilistic understanding of being."We are often too quick at chomping down information without giving ourselves time to process, question and develop what is basic to our being: Authenticity- our own opinions. To do that, we all need space (actual space!) to think, reflect, contemplate and find out what we really think or how we truly feel.As a practicing visual artist, I find it to be of upmost importance to discover and establish what I call a "hidey hole."A "hidey hole" is where I can run away to, process, digest information and find clarity in my thoughts. I believe that only then, I may come close to having an original thought.About TEDxIn the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
