TEDxLMSD - Dr. Sulayman Clark - The Abolitionist Movement & Effecting Change in Modern Times

A native of Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Sulayman Clark ( attended Cheyney University of Pennsylvania where he graduated cum laude. He later earned a Master of Arts degree from Stanford University and Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees from Harvard University in the area of Administration, Planning and Social Policy.Dr. Clark is a university administrator and fund raising consultant with particular expertise in the area of major gift acquisitions and capital campaign planning. His professional interests are in the areas of institutional advancement with a focus on educational and social service initiatives and institutional capacity-building strategies that promote sustainable growth and effective service delivery. His previous appointments include: Vice President for Development at Hampton University, Tuskegee University, Fisk University, Lincoln University (PA) and Morehouse College.Dr. Clark is also a noted author and educational historian. He was chosen to catalog and index the William H. Dorsey Collection, a rare collection of primary source materials including manuscripts scrapbooks, and memorabilia covering the period, 1840-1913. His recent historical novel entitled, The Rains: Voices for American Liberty, is based on those archival holdings. The Rains is a graceful and uplifting tale about personal and societal transformation and the unrelenting quest for a greater America. The story is set in antebellum Philadelphia, when the city was a hot bed for the abolitionist movement and a major hub of the Underground Railroad. This fact-based historical novel is inspired by actual people and events and reveals the struggles of free persons of color and an inter-faith community of activists who struggled and sacrificed to end slavery and promote sweeping social and educational reforms. It was a turbulent period when democracy was on trial and Americans sought to realize the true meaning of "We the People". But it was more than intellectual combat. It was a battle for the heart and soul of a nation.In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
