TEDxUD - Dr. Tom Powers - What's in an Engineer's Mind?

Dr. Thomas Powers is currently an assistant professor in the Philosophy Department and research fellow of the Delaware Biotechnology Institute at the University of Delaware. He directs the Science, Ethics, and Public Policy program and serve as assistant director of the Delaware Interdisciplinary Ethics Program. Prior to coming to Delaware, Dr. Powers was a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia. His Ph.D. in philosophy (University of Texas at Austin) concerned formalism in ethics and the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. Some of his recent research focuses on the ethics of emerging technologies (especially nanotechnology), computer ethics, and environmental ethics.In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
