Her expertise is International and Operational Law, and she received a LLM in International and Operational Law from the Army Judge Advocate General Legal Center and School in May 2003. Colonel Smith has spent the majority of her career in the Fleet Marine Force serving as an operational law advisor for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), I MEF and III MEF, 3rd Marine Division, and the Marine Forces Command in Norfolk, VA.
