TEDxNottingham - Mary Jackson - School Grounds

Mary has worked for over fifteen years at Learning through Landscapes, a charity that focuses on the benefits to children from outdoor learning and play within their education. She brings to the table combined perspectives by merging her experiences and lessons from both her education and design backgrounds. Her talk is a celebration of creativity in school grounds around the world. All too often, school grounds are neglected by designers as spaces for children to interact and explore. Research has shown that these spaces are essential for young learners to develop social skills, self-confidence and a greater awareness of the world around them. For many of these children, in an increasingly urbanised world that continues to encroach upon them, school grounds are the only safe place to which they have daily access. For more on school grounds and the work Mary is involved with, check out: TEDxIn the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
