Weather Africa? The TAHMO Continental Observatory: Dr. John Selker at TEDxOSU

Dr. Selker completed his Bachelor in Physics in 1981 from Reed College He worked as a consulting engineer in the USA (electro-mechanical design), Kenya, Somalia, Sri Lanka and England (development projects focused on household cooking) from 1981-1987, receiving his MS in 1989 and Ph.D. in 1991 from Cornell University. Dr. Selker has been a professor in the department of Biological and Ecological Engineering at Oregon State University since 1991 and has published more than 120 peer reviewed publications and in addition to a text book. Current research projects include a broad suite of methodologies, including fiber optic sensing of temperature for ecological monitoring, the role of swelling soils in runoff processes, and new methods for measuring rainfall, humidity, and the interception of rain by trees. He is co-founder of SelkerMetrics.com, an environmental monitoring company that has been active in projects in the US and Canada. He is also one of six editors of the journal "Water Resources Research." In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
