Our theme for TEDxDelMar 2011 was "A Search For A Cure". In this video, Dr. Gough gives us his presentation on "Implantable Long-Term Glucose Sensors". David Gough has a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Utah and was an associate in medicine at the Harvard Medical School, an associate at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, a research associate at the Elliot P. Joslin Research Laboratory, Joslin Clinic, an assistant and then full professor at the Department of Bioengineering, UCSD where he currently serves. Dr. Gough was also the Chair of the Department of Bioengineering at UCSD from 1999 to 2002, the founder of GlySens, Inc, an adjunct professor at the Peking Union Medical College and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and an honorary professor at Qing Dao University. Dr. Gough's many awards include the NIH National Research Service Award, the IVAC Award in Physiological Monitoring, 1982; NIH Principal Investigator, 1980-pres; NIH Study Sections, 1988-pres; Member, US Army Medical Research Review Board, 2007-pres; Plenary Speaker, First World Congress on Biosensors, Singapore, 1990; Founding Fellow, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE): 1992, NIH National Advisory Committee on Diabetes Mellitus, 1997; Clinical Transition Award: BioMEMS and Biomedical Nanotechnology Congress, 2002; Dr. Gough teach biomaterials, heat and mass transfer, and biosystems control to undergraduate and graduate engineering students, and have supervised 30 PhD theses. He currently directs a renowned research program at UCSD investigating sensor function in subcutaneous tissue and biomaterials. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
