Chanchalapathi Dasa is Vice President of ISKCON, Bangalore, and is involved in its acclaimed programme, Akshaya Patra, which has won encomiums as the world's largest nongovernmental midday meal scheme for underprivileged school children. A public-private partnership, Akshaya Patra is a secular programme that combines professional management, innovative technology and smart engineering to deliver school lunches at a fraction of the cost of similar programmes in other parts of the world. In 2000 an idea was born -- of using the the ISKCON temple's festival kitchen infrastructure to cook and distribute food to government school children. One thousand five hundred children in five government schools in the outskirts of Bangalore, to begin with.Today Akshaya Patra serves lunch to over 1.3 million children in eight states in India, with facilities at 17 locations. School enrolment and attendance went up in the schools served by Akshaya Patra. School drop-out rates had come down. So has the number of underweight children in Bangalore schools.In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
