The Immunologist's View: Jeff Bluestone, Ph.D. at TEDxDelMar

Our theme for TEDxDelMar 2011 was "A Search For A Cure" and in his talk, Dr. Jeff Bluestone discusses his topic entitled "The Immunologist's View". Jeffrey A. Bluestone, Ph.D. is UCSF Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost; AW and Mary Clausen Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology. The research in his laboratory concerns the fundamental events that regulate T-cell activation and development during immune responses to autoantigens and transplantation antigens. His efforts have focused on understanding the basic processes that control T cell activation and tolerance. His hope is that the insights gained from these studies will help in the development of a new generation of toleragenic drugs that will "turn off" selected parts of the immune system, leaving the disease-fighting capabilities intact. In the spirit of ideas worth spreaading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
