TEDxSwarthmore - John Alston - Are We Good Enough for Chester?

The children in the Chester Children's Chorus and I have much to be proud of. We have learned to love the "Hallelujah Chorus," Mozart's Requiem, and dozens of Renaissance madrigals and motets. When we sing gospel and R&B, audiences cheer wildly. But these beautiful children live in poverty and attend some of the worst schools in the nation. Beyond the music, what can we do alongside them to help create a good society? In 1994, Associate Professor of Music John Alston created a community of strivers and seekers in the Chester Children's Chorus. His efforts to expand upon the successful model of the chorus culminated with the opening of the Chester Upland School of the Arts in 2008. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
