TEDxUSC - Ange-Marie Hancock - The Tyranny Of Tolerance

Ange-Marie Hancock, the associate director at the USC Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII), studies how Generation Y uses technology for political action. Hancock found through her personal study, the Millennium Puzzle, along with the PEW Research and CSII that young people are far more tolerant than older generations. Knowing the tolerance level of the younger generation (millenials) lead Hancock to conclude that tolerance is a lot more susceptible to the emotion of fear. So when fear is generated it becomes that much more difficult to extend those freedoms and enhance those freedoms to others. Hancock proposes that millenials, like those in the Middle East and North Africa, shouldn't only focus on tolerance, but also think about the ways they might craft a 21st century democracy instead of a 20th century democracy by emphasizing the deep political solidarity as a component and a companion to tolerance.About TEDx, x = independently organized eventIn the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.*(*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
