TEDxNewy - Mark Jackson - Everybody deserves music...nope, scrub that...everyone should play music.

Mark Jackson has, at various times, been PhD student, childcare worker, geographer, university lecturer, mental health worker, and public transport activist. Through it all he has always been a musician and community focused kind of bloke. In late 2009 he created a job for himself as a 'community musician' that combined his work experience and passions into a single occupation and business. Always the unconventional Merewether boy, Mark learned a lot about community from living in Bendigo for a dozen years before returning to Newcastle to try his hand at helping people to play music together. He has succeeded admirably, taking a bunch of Novocastrian retirees (and hanger on-ers) to be feted as Australia's pre-eminent community uke group at the Melbourne (and Hawaii!) Ukulele Festivals. In the early 80s Mark was a member of the celebrated Castanet Club, and now explores 'blurgrass' with his band The Do Riders.www.tedxnewy.comAbout TEDx, x = independently organized eventIn the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
