Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: What I Have Learned as a Young Scientist.Andrew Sherlock, HS '12, started growing bacteria for a science experiment when he was seven and has been engagedin scientific research ever since. He was featured in Popular Science for an award-winning experiment on antibacterialremedies to treat E. coli on produce. In 2010 he was a SIEMENS Semi-Finalist and Intel ISEF finalist for his work onmortality patterns from pandemic influenza and pneumonia by age group. Selected to participate in the ColumbiaUniversity Science Honors Program, Sherlock returned to Columbia this past summer to study Linear Algebra and internat the Hertog Global Strategy Initiative in their 2011 program on "The History and Future of Pandemic Threats."In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
