TEDxAdelaide - Andrew Lowe - DNA Barcoding for Biodiversity

Species and groceries have more in common than you might think...DNA barcoding is revolutionising the way we identify species. Very much like supermarket groceries have barcode labels, every species on earth has its own unique barcode which is built into the DNA of each cell. The recent incredible advances in genomics technology have allowed DNA barcoding to be routinely applied to discover species, identify biosecurity risks, verify trade supply chain, promote conservation strategies, and more rapidly undertake environmental impact assessment. Andrew Lowe will unravel the mystery behind DNA barcoding, giving exciting and innovative examples of DNA barcoding in action, and emphasize the importance of understanding our planets biodiversity for our sustainable future. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
