TEDxDiliman - Rico Gutierrez - THINK TV: Empowering the Filipino Viewer

Rico Gutierrez, in another life, would have led a totally different career had he chosen -- right after high school in the United States -- to accept a scholarship at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Fortunately for us, his interest in the physical sciences was outweighed by his love for the arts, and he instead accepted a Painting scholarship at the Otis/Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles. In a personal mission to reconnect with his roots, Rico then returned to the Philippines to reconnect with his roots and where he majored in Theater Arts at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He is now best known for his outstanding contributions to the development and popularization of different television genres: horror, game shows, dating games, entertainment talk shows, and music video programming. Presently, he directs several shows for GMA-7, including the fourth season of the global reality show phenomenon, 'Survivor'. Here, Rico talks about the untapped role of television for empowering the viewer. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
