TEDxSantaMonica - Michael Ernst Goldstrom - Translating The Language Of Opera

Alexandra Schenck, SingerTali Tadmor, AccompanistAt first glance, this Julliard trained actor/comedian/writer may distract you with jokes, humor or non-sequiturs, but stay tuned, Goldstrom isn't kidding around when he speaks about opera. This art aficionado will demystify the language of opera so that you may understand it... or not. As it turns out, (subtitles aside) many opera singers have no idea what they are saying. How will opera survive if more often than not, the audience is bored or asleep? Goldstrom will give insight about the future of opera while unveiling one of the most intense, adrenaline-inducing, and intellectually stimulating art forms in Western culture.Goldstrom is a graduate of Columbia University, The Juilliard School Drama Division, and The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. In addition to performing on stages throughout Los Angeles, Goldstrom teaches acting skills to singers. He was worked with the Domingo-Thornton Young Artists Program at the Los Angeles Opera, the Wolf Trap Opera Foundation, and the Bob Cole Conservatory at California State University at Long Beach. As "The Opera Coach," Goldstrom offers the world's first online acting course for opera singers. www.theoperacoach.comIn the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
