TEDxAFS-Margaret Sayers Close Encounters with the Confederate Flag

This presentation weaves together four brief stories in which the flag plays a central role. The stories are told from the speaker's perspective as a "Southern white mother of two brown children." Margaret Sayers is a child and adolescent psychologist and an AFS parent. She regularly gives workshops on a variety of parenting topics. "I grew up in North Carolina in a very politically conservative family," says Margaret. "By the age of eight, my parents had dubbed me a socialist because of my ceaseless questioning of racial and socioeconomic injustices that were evident all around me in the rural community where I was raised. My husband and I, both white, adopted two biracial children. This experience has personalized my experience of racism." In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
