MUSIC PERFORMANCE: UPAF's youth choral program began July 8, 2000 on the campus of Indiana-Purdue Universities of Fort Wayne, IN, under the direction of Marshall White. The Voices of Unity Youth Choir (VOU) is a unique and exciting soulful choral group comprised of young people ages 7 to 19 from various backgrounds in the Fort Wayne community and beyond. The program's goal is to equip, educate, and empower youth for the world before them. The program prepares them to be successful leaders who will give back to their society and make a difference in their college life, adult life and in their professional careers. Since the choir's beginning at the turn of the 21st century, they have drawn National and International attention as a powerful, effective artistic and youth development program. In 2007, VOU acquired their first national endorsement from Bill Polian, President of the 2006-07 Super Bowl XLI Champion Indianapolis Colts and asked to perform The National Anthem with R&B singer Keyshia Cole on the NFL 2007-08 Kickoff Celebration. The choir has also performed for several of the Indianapolis Colts events including the opening of the Lucas Oil Stadium in 2008. In 2009 VOU was designated as one of 50 semi-finalists in the country distinguished for being a top arts and humanities-based program serving youth beyond the school hours. In addition, the choir has had the opportunity to work with artists such as Heather Headley, Roberta Flack, The Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Josh Groban, and with R&B sensation Keyshia Cole on the nationally televised NFL 2007 Kick-Off Celebration for the Indianapolis Colts. They have shared the performance stage with John Mellencamp, Stephen Still and Kelly Clarkson The Voices of Unity was invited to represent the United States of America in the 6th World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China in July, 2010 to compete at the highest level. VOU is the first-ever Indiana choir to be selected to participate in the World Choir Games, which is the largest choir competition in the world and has become known as the "Choir Olympics. Over 400 choirs from more than 80 countries were represented in this prestigious choral event competing in various categories of choral music. The Voices of Unity won two gold medals, one in the Popular Choral Music category and one in the Gospel and Spiritual category and were also named Grand World Champions in the Gospel and Spiritual category. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxFortWayne, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxFortWayne event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED.
