TEDxDavis-Travis J Lybbert-Seeing Development on a Bike... Instead of Development as Aid

Professor Lybbert helps us make sense of the big problem that is poverty. He says the solution to poverty is not direct investment but directing opportunities. He is a firm believer in the power of the entrepreneurial spirit and the ability of people to make their own success, so long as they are provided with the tools to do. Travis Lybbert earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Economics from Cornell University, where he also taught engineering economics. He joined the faculty of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at UC Davis in August 2006 and currently teaches PhD, masters and undergraduate courses in economic development and applied economics. Dr. Lybbert conducts research in four interrelated areas of applied economics: risk, poverty dynamics, technology, and environment. Several of his current research projects involve work in various African countries. He has worked in North Africa, India, and in the Intellectual Property Division of the World Trade Organization. About TEDx, x=independently organize event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event.
