TEDxFortWayne - William Upchurch - Innovation First Step Towards Stagnation.mov

SPEAKER: William R. Upchurch is an Arts and Sciences Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, where he studies the rhetoric of gender in media and identity in digital environments. He has written about global economics and information flow to shed light on the ways in which ideas spread, and saw plenty of both innovation and stagnation during his time in Silicon Valley as well as the hobby games industry. And the reason he's including Air Hockey in his speech? He's a two-time United States Air-Table-Hockey Association (USAA) World Champion. TOPIC: Innovation is the first step toward stagnation: Stories of ebooks, light bulbs, and the invention of air hockey. The talk challenges the spatial metaphors we use to think about innovation and inspires a new direction for social and sustainable innovators. What is TEDx? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxFortWayne, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxFortWayne event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED.
