TEDxBrainport 2011 - Simona Rocchi - Design for social empowerment

How design changed from "making things more beautiful" to "shaping societal proceses and sustainable solutions for global challenges". Rocchi takes us on her journeys to lower-income regions in India where she was involved in helping entire communities to collaborate and create a better future for themselves."Give a man a fish and he will have a meal for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will have food forever." Based on this idea, Rocchi talks about a project that introduced new design and manufacturing techniques for cooking stoves to populations where many die of respiratory problems from the toxic smoke produced by their homemade stoves. By teaching people how to design better stoves and connecting them with community members who could produce them, they were able to make a direct impact on people's quality of life.About TEDx.TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading."
