TEDxCMUQatar - Farooq Burney - No Boundaries: Jam Up the Blockade

Farooq Burney is the director of Al Fakhoora, a Qatar based international program that aims to promote and secure the right to education for students in Gaza and the West Bank. Prior to joining Al Fakhoora, Farooq worked for a number of international humanitarian and developments organizations namely the Red Cross Red Crescent, Reach Out To Asia- Qatar Foundation. His background in international development, resources mobilization and advocacy have contributed to highlighting the issues of access to education particularly in Gaza and the West Bank.Farooq was on board the Mavi Marmara on May 31st when the Israeli Forces raided the ship killing nine activists. He had participated in the Freedom Flotilla to deliver computers to Gaza.Upon his return, Farooq went on a speaking tour in Canada, where he campaigned to create awareness on the events on the Mavi Marmara and the effects of the Israeli blockade on Gaza.TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.
