TEDxKarolinskaInstitutet - Örjan de Manzano - Neural mechanisms in creativity

By highlighting the link between mental illness and creativity, Dr. ?rjan de Manzano advocates that thinking outside of the box is to some extent facilitated by having a less intact box. de Manzano explains that highly creative people who do well on divergent tests have a lower density of dopamine D2 receptors in the thalamus than less creative people. Since schizophrenics are also known to have low D2 density in this part of the brain, de Manzano argues that this suggests a cause of the link between mental illness and creativity. ?rjan de Manzano is a researcher at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. He recently presented his PhD thesis "Biological mechanisms in creativity and flow", in which he presents a series of investigations into the neural underpinnings of creative thinking and musical improvisation. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
