TEDxJamaica-Orlando Patterson-"Democracy and Violence: Is there a link?"

Orlando Patterson is Professor of Sociology is one the world's preeminent cultural and historical sociologists. Professor Patterson's work has focused on liberty and freedom, among other areas, and he has made influential and lasting contribution to our understanding of the history, role, and development of these values in western culture. In this TEDxJamaica talk Orlando Patterson examines the paradox of Jamaica's robust tradition of electoral democracy with its high levels of internal violence and provides some fascinating insights. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxJamaica, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxJamaica event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized
