TEDxWoodsHole - Beth Murphy - The Promise of Freedom
Beth Murphy recently returned from Iraq, where she and her crew shot footage for Principle Pictures' latest feature, THE PROMISE OF FREEDOM. This documentary focuses on the thousands of Iraqis who risked everything to work for U.S. soldiers and diplomats as translators, drivers, civil engineers and cultural liaisons. Because of their work, they have been branded as traitors, and are being systematically targeted for death. A growing coalition of U.S. citizens, soldiers and lawyers—led by Kirk Johnson, formerly of USAID (United States Agency for International Development)—is compiling a list of these Iraqis and working to find them refuge. The Promise of Freedom raises questions about loyalty, betrayal, commitment, honor, upholding the values we say we hold dear, and what it means to create a legacy. Murphy will reflect on the intersection of the film's themes with her personal life, work and mission.Beth Murphy is the founder of Principle Pictures, a Boston-based company dedicated to making documentary films that educate, inform and inspire. Beth has led production crews to all corners of the world, often in war-torn or developing countries in order to focus on human rights and international issues.Currently, she is directing/producing The Promise of Freedom (supported by ITVS, The Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund and Chicken and Egg Pictures), a film about America's moral responsibility to its Iraqi allies. She is also directing What Tomorrow Brings (supported by Cinereach and the LEF Foundation), a documentary about the war of ideas in the struggle to educate Afghanistan's next generation of girls. In 2007, Principle Pictures produced Beyond Belief (winner of the Woods Hole Film Festival), a much-acclaimed film about two Boston-area women whose husbands were killed in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. In the aftermath, they traveled to Afghanistan to connect with war widows there and help them become self-sufficient. One of the film's subjects, Susan Retik, was recently awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal for her continuing work with Afghan widows. BEYOND BELIEF premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, airs on the Sundance Channel, and is now the focus of a nationwide outreach and education campaign to spark meaningful public dialogue and citizen activism around peace in Afghanistan, as well as to promote international understanding, tolerance and peace.----------About TEDx, x = independently organized eventIn the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
