TEDxWoodsHole - Bill Mebane - A Dance of Two Cultures: Science in Rural Haiti

Applying proven scientific methods within a culture where "cause and effect" is viewed through a completely different lens than it is in science be frustrating, confusing, often humorous, and always rewarding. This TEDx talk is about our efforts to teach the rural people of Haiti how to raise fish to feed their families. Aquaculture (fish farming) is a science that is intricately intermingled with basic principles of biology. Applying these principles for a practical purpose in Haiti, we find, is similar to dancing with a partner who hears a different tune. There is stumbling, some tears, and some laughter, but eventually the steps fall into place.Bill Mebane is superintendent of aquaculture engineering at the MBL's Marine Resources Center, where he oversees the sophisticated systems needed to maintain the aquatic organisms that are the lifeblood of research at the MBL. Mebane is engaged in experimental design to optimize aquatic facilities, both for maintenance and sustainable breeding of marine and freshwater organisms. Mebane also directs the MBL's Sustainable Aquaculture Initiative, which is building fish ponds in Haiti and developing fish-raising strategies to offer Haitians a reliable source of protein and income. A native of Philadelphia, Mebane previously worked as a fisheries biologist for Philadelphia Electric and also managed fish hatcheries in Minnesota and Florida.----------About TEDx, x = independently organized eventIn the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
