TEDxWoodsHole - Roy Gould - Other Worlds: Searching for Earthlike Planets from the Classroom

Just a few years ago, the Earth was one of only nine planets in the known Universe. Today, planets have been discovered around 1,000 stars beyond our Sun. Roy Gould is witness to a new era of space exploration—one in which anyone can transform a single pixel of light into a portrait of an entire planet, and one that is shaping the very way the next generation sees itself. Gould and his collaborators recently developed the MicroObservatory, a network of five automated telescopes that can be controlled over the Internet. They are now training middle- and high-school students across the country to use MicroObservatory to detect planets trillions of miles away, and to search for telltale signs of life on alien worlds.Roy Gould seeks new ways to visualize the Universe—and new ways to appreciate our place in it. He leads a team of education researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, exploring next-generation educational technologies for bringing scientific discoveries to students and the public.Gould has produced television shows for NOVA, as well as exhibits for science museums around the country. The latest exhibit, "Black Holes: Space Warps and Time Twists" is now on tour. For the past ten years, he headed the NASA Education Forum at the Smithsonian's Astrophysical Observatory.----------About TEDx, x = independently organized eventIn the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
